Charlotte Tees Up 2021 Presidents Cup

In September 2021, all eyes will be on Charlotte as the Queen City hosts the Presidents Cup, a premier international PGA TOUR event held biennially comprised of matches between the United States and an International Team of players from the rest of the world except Europe.

To build awareness and anticipation for the Cup’s turn in Charlotte, LGA worked closely with the PGA TOUR to host a weeklong Charlotte activation concurrent with the 2019 Presidents Cup in Melbourne, Australia, including a celebrity golf competition and a series of brewery watch parties.

The week began with a swing simulator competition at SouthPark Mall, emceed by LGA SVP and Director of Client Service Brooks Luquire. Former Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart and Bravo TV “Southern Charm” star Shep Rose joined PGA TOUR golfers and Charlotteans Harold Varner III and Johnson Wagner in a closest to the pin competition to benefit four nonprofits. Each philanthropy, including the Augustine Literacy Project, Charlotte Family Housing, First Tee of Greater Charlotte and Young Black Leadership Alliance, walked away with $10,000 to $15,000 from the PGA TOUR.

And the 16-hour time difference between Charlotte and Melbourne made happy hour watch parties a no brainer as the teams teed off down under. Hundreds of Charlotteans turned out to the nightly parties at Heist Barrel Arts, Catawba Brewing Co., Legion Brewing SouthPark and Sugar Creek Brewing, to watch the action and sample one-night-only specialty Presidents Cup brews.

Partygoers took photos with the Presidents Cup trophy and played golf games like Chippo and Puttskee, all while taking in the action at Royal Melbourne. The week ended on an exciting note for Team USA, as Playing Captain Tiger Woods went 3-0 in all matches, leading the U.S. to a 16-14 come-from-behind victory.

LGA secured local coverage of Charlotte VIPs attending the 2019 Presidents Cup, including interviews with Mayor Vi Lyles, Charlotte Center City Partners CEO Michael Smith and Presidents Cup 2021 Executive Director Adam Sperling, on outlets including FOX 46 (WJZY)WCNCWSOC and Charlotte Agenda.
